Straighteners and Curling Irons: Do & Don’t.

While curling irons and hair straighteners are fantastic tools for styling hair, they can also be dangerous if used carelessly. Here are a few easy ways to maintain healthy hair while sporting gorgeous styles.

Select the appropriate tool

Priority one should be given to selecting a curling iron or hair straightener that is appropriate for your hair type. Using a tool with a lower temperature setting is ideal for thin hair. Although thick hair can withstand higher temperatures, it’s wise to exercise caution. Tongs with ceramic plates or a ceramic rod are better because they heat up more evenly and don’t break as easily.

Make use of heat protection

Using a heat protectant product is essential before styling. It may be a cream, serum, or spray. By forming a barrier between your hair and the tongs’ heat, heat protection helps to minimize damage. To ensure that every hair strand is protected, make sure you apply the product evenly throughout your hair.

Temperature adjustment

Setting their curling iron or hair straightener to the highest temperature is a common mistake made by many people. This can harm your hair and isn’t always necessary. Lower the temperature at first, then raise it if needed. A temperature of between 150°C and 180°C is adequate for the majority of hair types. Higher temperatures should only be used if you have hard-to-style thick, coarse hair.

Make sections out of your hair

Before you begin styling, split your hair into small sections for optimal results. By doing this, you can treat each strand fairly and prevent the need to repeatedly go over the same area, which could result in more damage. As you work, use clips to keep the sections apart.

Avoid styling too frequently

Even though it may seem tempting to style your hair every day, doing so can cause significant harm. Try to use heat styling tools only a couple of times per week. Allow time for your hair to heal. You can use heat-free styling techniques like curlers or braiding on days when you don’t use heat.

Regularly clean your tools

Regular cleaning of your curling iron and hair straightener is essential. Hair damage may result from the tools heating unevenly due to product buildup. To clean the plates or rod, use a gentle cloth and a small amount of alcohol. Before you begin cleaning, make sure all of the tools have cooled.
